Under the patronage of Dr. Sameera Naji Khdim, Dean of the College of Science for Women, the Continuing Education Unit, in collaboration with the Department of Biology Sciences, organized an awareness workshop titled “The Abused Woman and Her Impact on Raising Children.” The workshop was presented by Ms. Salma Dawood Salman and Assoc. Prof. Mervat Youssef Khdim.
The workshop aimed to shed light on the issue of abused women, which is considered one of the most impactful social problems affecting individuals and communities. Abused women suffer from various forms of physical, psychological, and economic violence, which leads them to face difficult challenges in their daily lives. This violence also significantly affects the upbringing of children who witness it and are influenced by it. Abuse leads to depression, anxiety, stress, and post-traumatic disorders, which affect the woman’s ability to deal with her children normally. In addition, there is the social and economic impact, especially if she is fully dependent on the abusive partner, leading to economic hardship and an inability to meet the children’s needs. The children may suffer from continuous anxiety and fear, negatively affecting their mental health and fostering feelings of anger, helplessness, and low self-esteem. This increases the likelihood of them developing behavioral and emotional problems, as well as poor academic performance and difficulty interacting with peers or teachers due to constant anxiety and social isolation.
The workshop suggested several solutions, including psychological and social support, raising awareness about the effects of domestic violence, providing training for mothers and fathers on how to raise children in a healthy environment, combating domestic violence through the enforcement of laws that protect women and children, and providing a safe environment for them.
