As part of efforts to enhance academic cooperation and improve research performance, Professor Dr. Sameera Naji Khdim, Dean of the College of Science for Women, and Professor Dr. Amer Jaafar Sadiq, Head of the Quality Assurance Unit at the College, participated in an important scientific seminar organized by the College of Dentistry at the University of Baghdad. The seminar focused on discussing and analyzing research performance indicators for the University of Baghdad based on the Web of Science (WoS) database, one of the internationally recognized research databases used in university rankings.
The seminar opened with a lecture delivered by Dr. Omar Faleh, Director of the Quality Assurance and University Performance Department at the University of Baghdad Presidency. The lecture addressed key indicators and criteria used in the Shanghai Global University Ranking, which is considered one of the most credible and internationally recognized academic rankings.
Key topics of the seminar included clarifying the criteria of the Shanghai ranking, focusing on the main factors that the ranking uses to evaluate universities, including:
-The number of recipients of prestigious global awards such as the Nobel Prize and Fields Medals.
-The citation rate of research published in reputable international scientific journals.
-The number of publications in journals classified among the highest-ranking global journals (Top Journals).
-The overall academic performance of universities and the quality of their research outputs.
The seminar also discussed the research performance indicators of the University of Baghdad and ways to enhance its position in global rankings by increasing the number of publications in prestigious journals, encouraging researchers to target higher-ranking journals, and emphasizing the importance of research quality and its scientific impact.
The seminar participants emphasized the importance of developing strategic plans to improve the university’s global ranking by strengthening international cooperation, developing research policies, and encouraging innovation and creativity across various disciplines.
This participation is part of the ongoing efforts by the College of Science for Women to enhance the quality of higher education and research, and to support the University of Baghdad’s plans to achieve academic and research excellence in line with global quality standards.
The seminar concluded with recommendations aimed at developing research infrastructure, motivating faculty members and researchers to publish their work in reputable global journals, which will contribute to improving the university’s ranking and enhancing its position on the international stage
