Under the patronage of Dr. Sameera Naji Khdim, Dean of the College of Science for Women, the Psychological Counseling and Educational Guidance Committee in the Department of Biology Sciences, in collaboration with the Psychological Counseling and Educational Guidance Unit and the Student Activities Unit at the college, held a welcoming and awareness seminar for first-year female students on Tuesday, November 26, at the Biology Sciences Department Library. The event was attended by Dr. Adel Hussein Talib, Assistant Dean for Administrative and Financial Affairs, Dr. Fikret Majid Hassan, Head of the Baghdad Science Journal Unit, Dr. Muhammad Abdul-Ridha Hamdan, Head of the Department, Dr. Safa’ al-Din Ahmad Shanter, Department Secretary, Dr. Shaimaa Ismail, Chair of the Department’s Guidance Committee, along with committee members. Faculty members and students from the department also attended.
The seminar began with speeches by the Assistant Dean and the Department Head, who welcomed the students and wished them a successful and distinguished academic year. They emphasized the importance of persistence and understanding the academic subjects through practical application to acquire true knowledge and science. Advice was also given to the students regarding regular attendance and participation in lectures to gain knowledge and learning. Dr. Fikret then spoke about the importance of libraries and reading for students, alongside electronic libraries that provide scientific resources for students.
The seminar also featured an educational lecture presented by Dr. Shaimaa on drugs and their negative effects on society. Through a presentation, she explained the types of drugs, methods of their spread, and how to avoid them, emphasizing that they are a destructive plague for the future of youth, who are the backbone of society and the foundation for the progress of nations. Dr. Shaimaa, along with the department’s faculty members, provided a set of observations and instructions about the student disciplinary law in institutions of the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, highlighting the importance of adhering to the regulations and guidelines that shape the behavior of university students.
The seminar concluded with a thank-you and appreciation to the students and all attendees for their active participation, listening to the topics presented, and interacting to achieve the intended goal of raising awareness and encouraging students to adopt proper behaviors that will elevate them in society and shape them into outstanding future female leaders
