On the occasion of Guidance Day, the Psychological Counseling and Educational Guidance Committee in the Department of Mathematics held an introductory and informative workshop for first-year students on Monday, November 25th, in the Department of Mathematics hall. The event was attended by Mr. Saad Hassan Hammoud, the head of the Psychological Counseling and Educational Guidance Unit at the University of Baghdad, Assistant Professor Dr. Yousra Abdul-Sahib Saif al-Din, the Assistant Dean for Scientific Affairs and Students, as well as members of the teaching staff and students from the department.
The workshop was opened by Ms. Zekra Abdul-Latif, the head of the Counseling Committee in the Department of Mathematics, who welcomed the first-year students and wished them a successful and prosperous academic year. She emphasized that the Counseling Committee is committed to supporting students, addressing any obstacles or problems they may encounter. Afterward, a lecture titled “Bullying Among Youth at the University Stage” was presented by Dr. Farah Jawad. She highlighted the concept, causes, and forms of bullying, which is considered an extreme behavior and a social problem with long-lasting negative psychological and social effects. She then discussed how individuals and universities should deal with it, emphasizing the need for self-awareness, support, solidarity with peers facing bullying, and the proper use of technology for research, acquiring knowledge, and developing skills to raise awareness among young people. She also emphasized the importance of informing the department’s Counseling Committee if any student faces bullying or other problems, so the necessary actions can be taken. She stated that the committee’s doors are always open to provide assistance and solve any problems students may face.
The workshop also included advice and guidance on academic performance and behavior, presented by Mr. Saad and Dr. Yousra . They both stressed the importance of students maintaining modesty, adhering to the official dress code, and focusing on their studies with perseverance to achieve success and excellence.
Following this, Ms. Hiba Awad delivered the second lecture titled “Student Discipline in Higher Education Institutions.” She explained the student discipline law and emphasized the importance of adhering to the regulations and rules that guide the behavior of disciplined university students. She urged students to familiarize themselves with these laws and avoid improper behaviors such as skipping lectures, showing indifference, and neglecting their studies, as these negatively impact their academic performance.
The workshop concluded with a thank you to the students and all attendees for their active participation in making the event successful by engaging with the topics presented and interacting to achieve the desired outcome: raising awareness and encouraging students to adopt correct behaviors that will elevate them in society and prepare them to become competent leaders in the future.
