The College of Science for women at the University of Baghdad discussed the master’s thesis entitled “Synthesis, Characterization and Preliminary Anti-oxidant evaluation of some Schiff bases derived from \u03b2-lactam compounds and their metal complexes.”By the student: Jinan falh Hassan Jassem<\/p>\n

This thesis aims to synthesize and characterize two new ligands from Schiff bases and their complexes in multiple fields. The ligands were prepared through chemical synthesis and analyzed using advanced spectroscopic techniques, including 13<\/sup>C-NMR, 1<\/sup>H-NMR, UV, FT-IR, and elemental analysis, and showed a perfect match with the proposed molecular formula of the ligands.<\/p>\n

This study, which was conducted in the laboratories of the College of Science \/ University of Baghdad, included the preparation of some metal complexes by reacting (L1 or L2) with binary ion salts (M+2 = Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, and Cd) in molar ratios of (1:1) metal: Ligand. The prepared physical complexes were studied and characterized using the techniques of infrared spectroscopy, ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, and thermo gravimetric decomposition, as well as measuring the molar conductivity, which showed the lack of ionic properties, except for CoL1, which was shown to be ionic, as well as NiL2, which was ionic. Magnetic susceptibility measurements were carried out for the prepared complexes, which showed the absence of a magnetic character for the zinc and cadmium complexes, while these measurements proved the presence of a paramagnetic character for the cobalt, nickel and copper complexes. The metal content was determined using the flame atomic absorption technique and measuring the chlorine content, which showed the presence of chlorine inside the coordination sphere as an electron-donating ligand or outside it. The results suggested distorted octahedral geometric shapes, except for CoL1, which gave a tetrahedral shape. Biological activity was conducted, as CoL1 showed antibacterial and antifungal activity compared to Schiff base ligands. The antioxidant content of some complexes prepared as free radical inhibitors was studied and they showed antioxidant activity.<\/p>\n

The most important recommendations reached by the thesis are:<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. Synthesis of Schiff bases using cephalexin and cefodroxil with the aldehyde 4-hydroxy-3-methoxybenzaldehyde and para-insaldehyde.<\/li>\n
  2. Synthesis of complexes of divalent elements (Co, Ni, Cu, Zn and Cd).<\/li>\n
  3. Identification of ligands GC-MASS, 1HNMR & 13CNMR and UV and complexes prepared using FT-IR, TGA, UV-Vis<\/li>\n
  4. Study the biological effectiveness of the prepared compounds and examine the possibility of using the prepared compounds as antioxidants.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
