A thesis in the College of Science for Women discusses the spectral estimation of heavy elements using the atomic absorption technique in the wastewater of the Dora refinery – Baghdad.<\/p>\n

The College of Science for Girls at the University of Baghdad discussed the master’s thesis entitled “Spectral estimation of heavy elements using the atomic absorption technique in the wastewater of the Dora refinery – Baghdad”By the student<\/strong>: Hawraa Gumeer Auied Shalal<\/strong><\/p>\n

The thesis aims to estimate the elements in the wastewater of the Dora refinery collected from the industrial wastewater treatment units in the Dora refinery and showed the efficiency of the treatment plant in removing pollutants and reducing the concentrations of heavy elements in the treated water that is returned to the Tigris River.<\/p>\n

This study, which was conducted in the laboratories of the Ministry of Science and Technology \/ Environment and Water Department in Baghdad, Republic of Iraq, included measuring some physical and chemical properties of industrial wastewater in addition to measuring heavy elements using flame atomic absorption spectroscopy<\/p>\n

The most important recommendations reached by the thesis are:<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. Implementing treatment of industrial wastewater after each production unit to reduce the strong flow and reduce the load to less polluted waste streams.<\/li>\n
  2. Installing new and advanced metering devices to measure the amount of water discharged into the river on an ongoing basis<\/li>\n
  3. Regular and continuous maintenance of the machines and basins operating in the industrial water treatment unit, especially the fans in the biological treatment basins that provide the necessary ventilation for aerobic bacteria to operate properly<\/li>\n
  4. Adopting and keeping pace with modern technologies in the field of crude oil refining to invest in developing the refinery for the purpose of reducing environmental impacts and improving the quality of the ecosystem.<\/li>\n
  5. Using advanced devices to measure and monitor pollution rates in the refinery, especially liquid waste discharged from production units before discharging them to the treatment units and then to the river.<\/li>\n
  6. Activating the role of water treatment units in the refinery to treat polluted industrial waste by adopting a periodic monitoring system.<\/li>\n
  7. Containing and treating volatile organic materials connected from the operations of the various units in the wastewater treatment system, and using advanced removal of metals using membrane filtration or any other physical\/chemical treatment techniques, and removing organic materials and COD using activated carbon or advanced chemical oxidation.<\/li>\n
  8. Reducing the toxicity of the wastewater using appropriate techniques (such as reverse osmosis, ion exchange, activated carbon, etc.) and containing and neutralizing unpleasant odors.<\/li>\n
  9. Conducting a study of the filter on the ions of other unstudied elements.<\/li>\n
  10. Conducting a similar study on the Dora Power Plant, Baghdad Gas Power Plant, South Baghdad Thermal Power Plant and Al-Quds Power Plant, as they all discharge water to the Tigris River after treatment.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
